Is Dissent free?
Yes, completely. There is no paid tier and there never will be.
Can my community move over from Discord?
Yes. The layout will feel familiar, and the Discord bridge lets you read and reply to chosen Discord channels from inside Dissent while people move across.
Do I need an email address or phone number?
No. You pick a username and a password, and you're given a recovery phrase to write down.
What happens if I lose my recovery phrase?
You can still sign in with your password, but the phrase is what unlocks your encrypted messages on a new device. Nobody can reset it for you, so keep it somewhere safe.
Is everything encrypted?
No, and we'd rather say so. One-to-one DMs, group DMs and encrypted channels are end-to-end encrypted. Ordinary channels and voice aren't yet. The Privacy page has the full list.
Who runs the server I join?
Whoever runs that node, which could be a community, a friend or you. Encrypted messages stay private from them; ordinary channels do not.
What if the node I use shuts down?
The rest of the network keeps working. Pick a node run by people you trust, or run your own.
Which platforms are supported?
The web app works in any modern browser. The Windows desktop app arrives at launch, and other platforms are planned.
Can I build plugins?
Yes. There is a documented plugin SDK. See the Plugins page and the docs.
